GREETINGS to trade unionists and supporters gathered in Tolpuddle this weekend to honour the sacrifice made by six farm labourers in 1834.

The ruling class — landowners, executive, judiciary and media — tried to nip trade unionism in the bud then by transporting the martyrs who stuck to their principles while thousands of working people marched in protest at their savage sentence.

Many times since then workers have fought for the right to organise collectively against power and wealth and have often paid the price of their commitment to principle.

For every setback there has been progress over pay, hours, sickness and holiday pay and other benefits but also social wage improvements, including the NHS and council housing. And since 1930 trade unionists have enjoyed the backing of their own daily paper, then the Daily Worker, now the Morning Star.

In paying tribute to George Loveless and his comrades, resolve also to support the only daily paper that supports ongoing trade union struggles.
